Mathematics is an important part of everyday life at Robin Hood Primary and Nursery School.
We strive to ensure that Mathematics work is meaningful and purposeful with a strong focus on embedding problem solving across the school. We wish pupils to feel confident and competent when using mathematics to enable them to make sense of the world and to solve real-life problems. Children who attend RHPNS will develop a love of maths and acquire the skills to prepare them for success in the wider world.
Throughout the school, children are given opportunities to engage in practical work using relevant materials and equipment, this is considered essential as the basis for the acquisition of the key concepts in Mathematics. Alongside this, the children also learn fundamental number facts and relationships which are the foundation of future work in Mathematics.
At Robin Hood Primary and Nursery School, we are ambitious for all of our children. They are all challenged to make good progress from their unique starting points.
To help children become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, we support our Maths teaching with further, short maths sessions. This includes the use of NCETM 'Mastering Number', Number Sense 'Times Tables Fluency and '5 Minute Maths'.
We are currently transitioning from White Rose towards using the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics curriculum which provides a coherently sequenced maths curriculum. All classes up to Y4 have moved to NCETM this school year with Y5 and Y6 moving to NCETM in 2024-25. We are working alongside the other Trust school with support from the Maths Hub to continue to develop our Maths curriculum. Part of this involves accessing the Year 5-8 Transition project in order to ensure our pupils continue to develop as confident mathematicians as they transition to secondary school
