Reading and Writing lie at the heart of the curriculum at Robin Hood Primary and Nursery School.

The nurturing environment enables us to teach our pupils the skill of writing in a systematic way from EYFS through to year 6.

We are dedicated to enabling our pupils to become lifelong readers and we believe that reading is key for academic success. We use evidence-based programmes of study to support delivery, such as 'Sounds Write' and the 'Write Stuff'.

We ensure the full coverage of the National Curriculum and aim to raise the standards of every pupil's writing and reading skills.

Reading

Reading

All our pupils should leave RHPNS as fluent readers who can readily access and comprehend written texts in order to understand the world around them.

We begin the teaching of reading in our Early Years through the use of the Dfe approved phonics scheme - Sounds Write.  Our pupils are taught to read with fluency, accuracy, prosody and understanding, utilising a combination of strategies including phonic knowledge, contextual clues and sight vocabulary. Children’s awareness of syntax, punctuation, expression and comprehension is developed and assessed through the explicit teaching of reading with prosody as well as individualised support for those with gaps in their phonetic knowledge.  We encourage our pupils to value books and read for both learning and pleasure, engaging with a range of literary texts from all genres and including books with diverse characters and authors.  Through our approach to reading we aim to nurture a lifelong love of literature in all children.

Writing

Writing

Pupils will leave RHPNS able to write clearly and accurately, adapting their language and style for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.

Our pupils need to communicate and children need to develop a passion and skill for writing where they feel comfortable in experimenting with different styles and formats.  Our pupils need to confidently express themselves in a range of contexts and we encourage them to experiment with different styles and formats, gradually adopting their own writer’s voice through which to convey meaning.

Our pupils will acquire a rich vocabulary and a strong command of both spoken and written English, allowing them to communicate effectively. From the Foundation Stage, all children’s attempts at writing, including emergent writing, are valued and built upon, so that children appreciate the importance of their writing in conveying meaning to the reader. Pupils’ knowledge and skills in transcription, spelling, composition and editing are deepened throughout their time at RHPNS through high quality teaching and responsive feedback.  Writing is embedded across our wider curriculum. The development of writing at RHPNS is supported through The Write Stuff approach, building on the training delivered by Jane Considine in our Trust INSET November 2022.
